Shares of TiVo jumped Wednesday after the San Jose company said it will launch a new high-definition digital video recorder under an extended agreement with DirecTV Group, reigniting a once-cooling relationship.
- from TiVo, DirecTV to offer new HD DVR to customers
About time. Actually, it’s about two years late, since the new model won’t be available until “mid to late 2009″. But it is pretty good timing for upgrading my leased HR20.
I wonder if they will feature the DLB that I love so much about my non-HD DirecTV Tivo?
I’m guessing it will since it’s a TiVo patented feature.
(For those who don’t know what he’s talking about, I forget what DLB stands for exactly (Dual Live Buffer?) but basically a TiVo can flip between the two tuners on two different channels and have a rolling half-hour buffer on each tuner. So you could theoretically watch one show and when you hit a commercial break flip to the other tuner and catch up. I don’t use it personally, but I can see how it would be handy, especially if you were watching two sporting events simultaneously.)
In contrast in order to do that with the HR-20 I’d have to *record* two programs and flip between them via the usual interface. On the TiVo it’s a keystroke to flip between the two tuners.
